The Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (Adnec) announced on Wednesday that the value of its direct and indirect contributions to the Abu Dhabi economy reached Dh1.12 billion in the first quarter of 2017, representing eight per cent growth above set targets.
The company attributed the positive results to improved contributions from its existing events, including Idex and Navdex 2017, which marked the largest and most successful editions in their history. Held from February 19 to 23, the event drew the participation of 1,235 companies and attracted 105,400 visitors, up 4.3 per cent compared to the previous edition. The event also facilitated business deals worth Dh19.17 billion, posting a five per cent increase over the past edition.
"We are delighted with the strong first quarter results in 2017. Adnec is implementing the collective vision of our leadership that recognises the crucial role of the non-oil sector in achieving sustainable economic growth," Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs and chairperson of Adnec, said.
Adnec also achieved consistent growth in its UAE nationals workforce, reaching 60.8 per cent of total staff, while Emiratisation in senior management positions reached 82 per cent towards the end of the quarter.
"Adnec has continued to deliver impressive growth and strong performance across all our business segments in the first quarter of 2017. This is achieved thanks to our continued focus on the diversifications of our event portfolio, meeting the evolving requirements of our customers, as well as developing the skills of our workforce, especially the UAE national talents," Humaid Matar Al Dhaheri, group CEO at Adnec, said.
Adnec's efforts to deliver on its sustainability commitments has seen a reduction of 160 tonnes in CO2 emissions by recycling 364 tonnes of materials. It also achieved significant cost savings through promoting energy efficiency and rationalised use of resources.
Adnec also won two major international conference bids during the first three months of 2017, including the FIP Pharmaceutical Sciences World Congress 2019. Set to run at Adnec from September 22 to 26 that year, the FIP conference is expected to attract more than 3,000 participants, including heads of international and regional associations as well as key decision makers in various disciplines related to the pharmaceutical sciences. This win places the UAE as the first country in the GCC and only the second in the Middle East to hold this event.
