Angela Merkel is showing the way to beat terror - with compassion. She's emerged as the great humanitarian from the refugee crisis that is threatening Europe's unity. Europe has a terror problem, no doubt, but the German chancellor must be lauded for her approach that is based on love. She has shown courage under fire. You can win over the violent ones by opening doors, not by putting up walls (is Donald Trump listening?). Europe is going into a shell. There's suspicion and fear. The continent's liberalism is coming under strain.
Some migrants have turned against it. Attacks are common. But Germany is a sea of compassion in this climate of hate, and Merkel is leading by example. One million refugees are already on its shores. Many more will follow and lead the German life. They will shore up the country's depleting workforce and the nation will benefit. It took vision and courage, which Merkel has plenty off. She has been resolute and firm, and in the process has become Europe's lone stateswoman. This is a new Germany. A compassionate Germany. A welcoming Germany. Challenges are many, chief being the integration of refugees into the country's way of life. It will take time and effort. But Germany will get there led by Merkel's able hand.
