Badminton enthusiasts here have a busy weekend coming up when they will be able to watch the top players battling out for the two titles at stake in the Shuttle Time Dubai Badminton Club Championships.
The finals will see Team Victor B meeting NSNL-SD B in second tier action while Team Yonex will face the formidable Prime Star squad to decide the winners of the main Shuttle Time Dubai Club Championships for 2016.
In the semifinals, Team Yonex continued their winning form, accounting for fourth placed (group stage) NSNL-SD A 3-2, and second placed Prime Star, powered by former Indonesian player Imam Adi Kusuma, defeating third placed Team Victor 3-2.
The minor premiers of Group A Level B, Newbreed B, went into the semifinals with four from four wins in the preliminary rounds, but were convincingly defeated by Group B second place-getters Team Victor B, who took out the tie 4-1.
The other semifinal in this section saw the Group B minor premiers Friday Smashers up against Group A Level B second place-getters NSNL-SD B. Friday Smashers came into the semifinal with an unbeaten record, but in the match of the day NSNL-SD B won a nail-biting contest over their more favoured opponents, defeating Friday Smashers, 3-2, with three of the matches going to five sets before NSNL-SD B emerged victorious.
The two-month long weekends only tournament saw the sides playing in the group qualifiers initially, in five categories - men's singles, men's doubles, mixed doubles, women's doubles and masters doubles (40 and above).
And, to make things easier for the ardent badminton fan, entry is free to the finals, like it has been for the past two months at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
The 160-player, 15-team championships, come to an end at the Dubai Sports World's six-hova court facility and the list includes players who have played at the highest level once, including representation at the international level.
The top four teams in Group A Level A played off to decide the finalists, and in a variation on last year's format, the Group B semifinals were contested by the top two teams in Group A Level B and the top two teams in Group B. While Group A Level A saw the favourites win through to the finals, in a day of upsets both Group B minor premiers were outgunned by their less fancied rivals.
The Club Championships are held under the umbrella of Shuttle Time Dubai, an inclusive development programme which aims to encourage participation in badminton across the community, and which operates with the support of the Dubai Sports Council and under the guidelines of the Badminton World Federation.
