Retailers in the Ajman vegetable and fruits market hiked the prices of many food items, an inspection carried out by the Ministry of Economy has found. The ministry has warned the retailers and asked them to reduce the prices. Failure to do so will result in hefty fines, they were told.
The Ministry of Economy will continue to inspect the markets in the UAE during the Holy Month of Ramadan to ensure that the higher demand for select consumable items is not exploited.
The inspection was led by Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi, Director of the ministry's Consumer Protection Department.
During the inspection, Dr Al Nuaimi told sellers to reduce the prices of the goods that were being sold at higher prices. He also emphasised the need to use price tags.
Shoppers at the market complained about price hikes of essential items like tomatoes and cucumbers.
Dr Al Nuaimi told shoppers to report unjustified price hikes to the ministry on 600522225 or to Ajman's Department of Economic Development on 80055.
The economic department and the municipality will carry out another inspection tomorrow to ensure that retailers have reduced the prices.
