US diplomatic missions in the UAE issued an alert for American citizens to remain vigilant in the wake of recent terrorist attacks in Europe and across the Middle East.

In a statement sent out to American expatriates and posted on the Facebook pages of the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and Consulate General in Dubai, the US State Department said they "would like to remind US citizens of the continuing need to implement sound personal security practices as they go about their daily lives".

The statement noted that Daesh militants have called on its supporters to attack American and allied targets following the military operations against the terrorist organisation in Iraq and Syria.

"In response to the air strikes, Daesh called on supporters to attack foreigners, particularly in coalition partner countries," the statement read.

"We believe there is an increased likelihood of other reprisal attacks against US, Western, and coalition partner interests throughout the world, especially in the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, and Asia."

"US citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take appropriate steps to bolster their personal security," the statement added.

Additionally, the statement noted that high-profile events, public gatherings, places of worship, hotels, clubs and tourist destinations may be at risk, though the US State Department regards the UAE as a generally safe destination for American travellers and expats.

On its website, it says that "law enforcement units have effectively demonstrated the capacity to detect, deter and prevent acts of terrorism in the UAE."

The website also notes that "most travellers to the UAE are not effected by crime" and advises Americans "to take the same security precautions in the UAE that one would practise in the United States or any large city abroad."
