In preparation of the UAE's 46th National Day, Ras Al Khaimah is decorating all its roads and roundabouts with 3,500 flags.
This will be the most number of UAE flags to be publicly displayed in emirate ever, according to a top official. Ahmed Al Hammadi, director-general of the RAK department of public works, said they have already started decorations.
Last year, around 2,000 flags decked the emirate for National day celebrations. "So, this is a significant rise in the number of flags to be displayed." Al Hammadi said his field teams have already decorated streets and roundabouts in RAK downtown with some 1,700 flags. "These were mostly hoisted on the Sheikh Mohammed bin Salem road, Shamal road, Corniche Al Qawasim, as well as the areas of Khuzam, Qassadat, Al Rams, Julphar, Barirat, Shamal, and Khat."
"Special attention will be given to the southern parts of the emirate including Masafi, Dafta, Azan, Al Gheil, Asfini, Kadra, Shawka, and Al Manaei."

4,000 spots documented

The Ras Al Khaimah committee for geographic names has documented over 4,000 spots across the emirate. Dr Abdullah Al Taboor, committee head, said these locations have been named as they are commonly referred to by the locals, "who are well aware of the history of these remote areas". So far, the committee has completed about 80 per cent of the emirate, he added. "The mission is to discover and name new spots, covering all towns, villages, mountains, roads, farms, valleys, plains, and coasts," he said.
