Cricket for a Cause, the brainchild of 17-year-old student Ashar Yahya, has surpassed its initial goal by raising Dh43,700 for Dubai Cares.
The event was aimed to raise Dh40,000 and saw an increase in participation this year with 16 stellar teams taking to the field for a good cause. After many nights of game, Ladybird Nursery 1 walked away with the top prize of an Entertainer app given to each player.
What began as a small initiative by Yahya has become a sponsored fundraising event. In fact, this year's tournament raised triple the amount of last year's and has drawn twice the number of participating teams.
Organised by a team of five students led by Ashar, participation in 'Cricket for a Cause' was open to both corporate and private teams. A total of 16 teams participated with three games each. Games took place at Cover Drive, Al Quoz, between June 27 and July 3. Private teams were requested to offer a minimum donation of Dh300 as an entry fee.
"Ashar's passion for this noble cause got us to sign up as a partner for 'Cricket for a Cause.' We wish him and the league all the best and hope it will continue in the years to come," said Rabea Ataya, CEO, Bayt.com, which was among the sponsors of the event.
"We are happy about our participation and seeing Ashar grow into a young man who brought his vision to fruition. It requires something special to create such an event and I wish Ashar and his team all the best for the future," added Valrani, CEO, Ladybird Nurseries, another sponsor.
