An Emirati poet allegedly misused his social media accounts to publish poems that breached public morality.
Authorities in Abu Dhabi are taking legal action against the writer, known as the "poet of the senses" (Shaa'ir Al Ahasees in Arabic) for misusing social media.
According to a statement issued by the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, the poet is reported to have published a poem, which is contrary to the UAE's social values, ethics and religion.
Authorities have not yet disclosed what the poem stipulated; however a web search of the writer's name reveals various published poems, including one that speaks explicitly about sexual acts. The use of social networking sites, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, in an aggravated manner that breaches public morality is illegal in the UAE.
Under the Federal Law No. 5/2012 cybercrime law, any form of electronic misuse and unethical acts online could be a violation and the user could receive a hefty fine between Dh50,000 and Dh3 million, and/or a jail term.
