The nearly two decades-long efforts by the government to provide air connectivity to northern Kerala inched close to reality with a test flight touching down at the Kannur Greenfield international airport on Monday.A 10-seater Dornier aircraft of IAF from Bengaluru landed smoothly at the 3050 meters long runway at 9.10am.
CM Oommen Chandy, his cabinet colleagues and senior officials received the flight piloted by Air Marshal R. Nambiar at the tarmac. The flight took off to Bangalore after the inaugural function. Thou-sands of people from various parts of the district and outside gathered at the airport to view the test flight operation. The function was boycotted by the CPM-led opposition LDF.
Declaring the trial operations successful, the CM said that the airport spread over 2,200 acres of land will begin commercial operations in September this year.
