Police said that unidentified men targeted Dr Usman and his guard on Tuesday afternoon in the middle class neighbourhood of Nazimbad. Dr Usman was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Dr Usman served in the medical ward of the same hospital. Officials believe the killings of Dr Usman, a Sunni, was a tit-for-tat assassination of an educationalist, 54-year old Syed Sibte Jaffar Zaidi, belonging to Shia community on Monday, by unknown assailants while he was riding on his motorbike on his way to his home in Khamosh Colony.

Last week, social worker Perveen Rehman also lost her life in a targeted killing. She was a long-time director of the Orangi Pilot Project (OPP) and was gunned down in the Pakthunabad neighbourhood of Karachi, on March 14.
