The Federal Supreme Court ordered a woman to pay Dh150,000 and return the dowry to her husband in Abu Dhabi.
She had filed for divorce after signing the marriage contract but before the wedding had taken place and been consummated. Her stated reason was that he had taken too long to arrange for the wedding.
The groom then filed a counter-suit, requiring the bride to pay for the wedding arrangements and move to the marital home. In the event she refused to do so, he demanded the dowry and wedding expenses be returned to him.
The court ruled in favor of the husband and struck down the wife's divorce plea.
When the wife appealed the ruling, she obtained the divorce but was ordered to return the dowry.
After a second appeal at the Federal Supreme Court, the husband affirmed he wanted to reconcile but she continued to demand a divorce.
Written documents and receipts confirmed that he had spent at least Dh150,000 on wedding expenses that she had to repay him.
