The Ras Al Khaimah Personal Status Court has granted khula - kind of divorce in Islamic Sharia - to an Arab woman from her husband for assaulting and insulting her.
The court also gave her the custody right of her four children, and ordered her husband to pay Dh10,000 against Eid or feast clothes for his kids.
He was also told to pay court and lawyer expenses.
As per court records, the man was found to have beaten and insulted his wife many times, and stopped spending on her and their children.
The wife's lawyer said her client endured all insults and assaults for years for the sake of her children, but the man didn't mend his ways.
"He kept insulting, assaulting and disrespecting her, and failed to provide his wife and children with a proper house. They were finally expelled from the rented apartment they were living in."
The lawyer noted that the family counselling section of the RAK courts could not settle the issue amicably, mainly because of the "stubborn" husband who refused even to show up.
The woman then requested for khula for the well-being of her children and herself.
After hearing to the wife's plea and based on the documents submitted, the court ordered the couple's separation, and the husband to pay the said money.
