Lowly Dhafra stunned defending champions Al Ahli in a six-goal draw at the latter's home turf in Dubai on Thursday.
Riding on a Makhete Diop hat trick visiting Al Dhafra fought resiliently to stage a spectacular second half rally in the 3-3 draw against the Red Knights at the Rashid Stadium.
Al Ahli, who were stunned by Al Jazira in their last match, were forced to share points second time in the Pro League this season so far. They are now in third position with 14 points from seven matches. Al Dhafra moved up to seventh place (10 points).
Diop drew the first blood for Al Dhafra in the 24th minute to head home a corner kick by Ahmed Ali past Al Ahli goalkeeper Majed Naser. Three goals in the space of five minutes after the teams crossed over gave home team fans something to cheer about. Eissa Ahmed opened the floodgates with a clever header in the 50th minute followed by Waleed Abbas, who tapped home Eissa's corner kick in the 53rd minute. Two minutes later Al Ahli's international star Ahmed Khalil tucked home a low shot at the near post to put the hosts 3-1 ahead.
Al Dhafra captain, Diop, however, was not done yet. He scored two goals in the space of nine minutes to silence the vociferous home crowd. He dodged past Waleed Abbas to put the ball past Majed Naser under the Al Ahli bar in the 69th minute.
Al Dhafra's Senegalese striker relentlessly put Al Ahli defence under pressure with his solo runs and eventually earned a spot kick Eissa tripped him inside the box. Diop made no mistakes in cancelling the Al Ahli lead with the resultant penalty in the 78th minute.
In an goalless draw, Kalba and Sharjah shared spoils on Wednesday in a bottom of the table clash.
Al Wasl, meanwhile, consolidated their position at the top with a 2-1 win over Emirates on Wednesday in an away match.
Fabio de Lima was their saviour with a late (85th minute) goal. Humaid Abbas had given them the lead in the 48th minute and Sebastian Sacha had put Emirates on equal terms.
