FUJAIRAH — The 5th Maktoum Championship Ramadan Cup got under way on Sunday with 14 teams from different parts of the UAE battling for basketball supremacy at the Ibn Al Nabber Basic School in Fujairah, a press release said.

Ajman-based Gulf Craft were off to a good start as they won their first game against Fujairah’s Sarah Salon, 95-75; while 2010 champions Vittol Tank Terminal International (VTTI) trashed Al Sharqi Hospital 106-67.

Guimo Gonzalez, tournament organiser, said the Maktoum Championship Cup gathers some of the best teams in the country during the Holy month of Ramadan with the champion team taking a prizemoney of 15,000 dirhams; while the runners-up get 10,000 dirhams.

Teams include defending champions Vopak Horizon Fujairah Ltd., Abu Dhabi’s Al Hur, VTTI, TransAfrik, St. John’s, Dibba, Fujairah International Airport, Sharks, Gulf Craft, Al Sharqi’s Hospital, Sarah’s Salon, Trojans, Fujairah Dream Team and Fujairah Seaport.

UAE national player Khalifa Salem again carried Gulf Craft to victory, scoring half of his 28 points in the fourth quarter. Spitfire Archie Cruz also exploded with 22 points and drained three triples.
