Apropos to the editorial ‘is Internet killing reading’ (January 17). We all know that for the overall development of every human being, reading is very important. But the advent of technology the traditional way of reading is slowly declining. The dictum ‘Books are our true friends’ seems to be outdated. Many say that Internet has posed a great threat to reading habits. New gadgets of technology have become time eating machines and all are trying to supersede one another to show their supremacy.

Reading in the digital medium has become a ubiquitous activity not only for students but also people of all ages and faith. We read all the time. Reading text messages, website content, report, PDF files, mails and eBooks has become an integral part of our life. In turn we are losing out on the sheer pleasure of traditional way of reading. Does it mean that technology has proven a bane to mankind? Has Internet affected negatively and put an end to the once favourite saying, ‘Growing up with books?’ No, it is not. It is important for us to recognise the apt use of Internet and know that technology can develop active, creative and thoughtful readers, equipped with the skill and strategies to develop and comprehend deeply.

At the same time measures are needed on sound footings to inculcate and I still the love of reading in the younger generation. It cannot be done overnight. Concerted efforts from all quarters, creating a conducive atmosphere at home, school, workplace and libraries is required to bring back the golden days of reading.
