A couple of dozen students from Abu Dhabi's Al Raha International School spent an afternoon in their community last week, knocking from door to door to collect used cooking oil.
It was the first of many such afternoons to come, part of a new environmental project just launched by Tadweer, the Abu Dhabi Centre of Waste Management, in collaboration with the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. The initiative involves converting waste cooking oil into clean biodiesel, which is bio-renewable, carbon-neutral and rapidly biodegradable.
"We are going from door to door, explaining to people why is good to recycle their used cooking oil and how to do it. We give them this green plastic container, where they can place the used cooking oil, which they can take to a nearby collection point, when it's full," said Rohan Kahn, a grade 11 student from Al Raha International School, involved in the initiative.
The pilot project will run for one month.
