A 34-year-old businesswoman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison as she was found guilty of premeditatedly murdering her lover while he was sleeping in her flat after a night she spent out drinking alcohol.
The Russian woman is believed to have been drunk when she stabbed her lover and slept by his side to wake up few hours later shocked and in denial of what she did.
She reportedly told the police officers, who reported to the crime scene in Al Nahda, Al Qusais, that she had spent enormous amounts on the victim, a Palestinian, and was late to realize that he was taking advantage of her. She wanted desperately to marry him and have his child but he kept evading her while depending on her in large amounts of money.
She received her sentencing tearfully.
The Court of First Instance ordered her to pay Dh 100,000 in damages to the victim's family. She will be deported after completing her jail term.
She has also been accused of having consensual sex outside wedlock and consuming alcohol without a license. She has been referred to the Court of Misdemeanours on those charges.
The victim's friend, a 41-year-old Syrian archives clerk, said that few hours before the incident he had had dinner with the victim at a restaurant in Al Garhoud.
"He looked as if something was bothering him. He said he wanted to break up with the defendant".
The last time he talked to the victim was around 3.30 am. "I called to check on him and he was then about to enter his flat".
Around noon the following day, the witness received a phone call from the victim's number.
"It was the defendant. She was crying as she told me she killed my friend and said did not know what to do".
The witness then reported the incident at Al Qusais police station. He recounted that he had learnt from the victim how the defendant used to get overwhelmed with jealousy whenever she would spot him looking at or talking to other women in public.
An Emirati café owner, 50, quoted the woman as telling him earlier that same night while drunk that the victim was being elusive with her constant requests to marry her after all the financial support she had given him. She said she had given him lots of money at different occasions and once half a million dirhams.
A police lieutenant said that the murder incident was reported around 12:45 pm on August 16, 2014.
"She was in a state of break-down and crying. Her hand was wrapped in a bandage. The victim was lying motionless on his back in the bedroom.
She told us she had returned to her place late and tried to wake him up. She then brought a kitchen knife with which she stabbed him. He woke up and tried to keep her away from him but she rushed him with two other stabbings in the chest".
The verdict may be appealed.
