Former bantamweight champion Hozumi Hasegawa beat Mexico’s Juan Carlos Burgos on Friday to claim the World Boxing Council featherweight championship.
It was Hasegawa’s second WBC title and he becomes the ninth boxer from Japan to win the championship in two classes.
The 29-year-old saw off title-holder Burgos after fierce exchanges of hooks and uppercuts and dedicated his win to his mother, who died of cancer last month.
“I think she is delighted up there because I’ve got the belt around me,” he said. “I’m glad that I won.”
The three judges unanimously scored the bout in favour of the challenger, who lost his bantamweight title to Mexico’s Fernando Montiel in April.
Earlier in the day, Japanese challenger Takahiro Aoh won the WBC super featherweight championship at the double-title event in Nagoya, central Japan.
Former featherweight champion Aoh, 26, controlled the bout throughout to outpoint his opponent, title-holder Vitaly Tajbert of Germany, 28.
