An employee in the Philippines lost his job for making insensitive comments on social media about the series of earthquakes that were felt in parts of the country.
Facebook user named, Brian Velarde Dela Cruz, angered several netizens when he wrote in his posts that the recent 'earthquakes were "boring" because no building collapsed'. Cruz, who works as a store clerk for a famous milk tea brand, also posted his mobile phone number so that someone would send him a text message.
The criticism over insensitive posts snowballed into public backlash on social media and netizens took screenshots of Cruz's posts and sent them to the HR department of the company he worked at.
Post the uproar, Cruz deleted the posts and issued a public apology but his company still decided to fire him.
Cruz later took to Facebook after being fired from work and wrote he was only cracking a joke and that people should not take it seriously. He also said that he is used to sharing hilarious posts and that his friends on social media are aware of that. It is not certain he would get his job back or not after posting a public apology but the document sent to him Cruz by the company says he violated its policy of morality, reported The Filipino Times.
On April 22, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the Philippines, killing at least eight people and prompting thousands to evacuate.
