ABU DHABI — Environment Agency–Abu Dhabi (EAD), in cooperation with Emirates Wildlife Society–the World Wide Fund for Nature (EWS-WWF), yesterday initiated the ‘Enviro-Spellathon’ programme for this academic year.
Sponsored by Shell Abu Dhabi, the programme raises awareness among schoolchildren on environmental issues such as climate change, global warming, water resources, desert environment, energy saving, waste and recycling etc.
At the official ceremony to launch the programme, Majid Al Mansouri, secretary general of EAD, said that since its inception in 2001, the Enviro-Spellathon programme had been increasingly successful. The programme, which was launched with 45,000 students from 172 schools, last year reached 116,000 students from 362 private and public schools in the emirate.
“It has effectively brought awareness on the local environment into the classrooms,” said Al Mansouri.
The Enviro-Spellathon consists of booklets for the participating students to study for two weeks.
