ABU DHABI — As many as 77 projects at a cost of Dh12.2 billion were carried out last year by the Roads and Technical Services Section in Abu Dhabi Municipality, the Chairman of the Department of Municipal Affairs, Dr Juwan bin Salim Al Dhahiri, said.
The projects, he told Khaleej Times, included roads, bridges, intersections and flyovers, maintenance operations, drilling projects and seaport projects.
"These projects aimed at making horizontal and vertical urban expansions in line with the Abu Dhabi Plan 2030," he said.
He added that works on maintenance and small-scale road and bridge projects in Abu Dhabi city were valued at Dh58 million while those carried out in Greater Abu Dhabi were worth Dh110 million. Internal roads in Greater Abu Dhabi stood at Dh75 million.
Among the many roads and bridge projects undertaken by the municipality, Al Dhahiri cited the expansion of Shaikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum Road and replacement of roundabouts with traffic signals at Mohammed bin Zayed City. Sas Al Nakheel also saw the construction of parking facilities and roads.
"The central laboratory tested 7,153 samples of materials used in these projects to ensure their conformity with accredited standards. Around 96.56 per cent of the examined materials were found to be satifactory," he said.
