AUS council reviews academic activities, awards projects

SHARJAH - The National Advisory Council of the School of Engineering (SOE) at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) held it annual meeting to brief members on the status of various academic activities within the SOE.

Members of the council also held a round-table discussion with students from the SOE and evaluated senior student projects in a poster and models competition held following the meetings. These projects included work done by students from various disciplines.

Five outstanding projects adjudged the winners of the competition include - in the poster category, GSM-based utility meter system. `Automatic face recognition' and `a new approach to styrene production,' took the top three slots while `smart wheel chair,' and `Arabic handwriting recognition system' were selected as winners in the models category of the competition. All winners were awarded cash prizes along with certificates.

The SOE National Advisory Council comprises representatives of leading institutions of both public and private sectors, such as Ministry of Public Works and Housing, Sharjah Municipality, Directorate of planning and survey, Petrofac International Ltd, AI Habtoor Engineering Enterprises, Sharjah Electricity and Water Department, Hewlett-Packard Middle East, Sun engineering and contracting Co, Schlumberger, Khatib and Alami, and the architectural academic office, among others.
