Veteran American photographer Elliott Erwitt will be presented with the prestigious Photography Appreciation Award by the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA). Omani Arts Foundation Bait Al Zubair will receive the Photography Research/Report Award.
Both winners will be presented with their accolades at the sixth annual HIPA awards ceremony on March 15 at the Dubai Opera.
Legendary photographer Erwitt, who was born in France in 1928 and has been a photographer for more than 60 years, follows a long line of photography heavyweights who have won HIPA's Photography Appreciation Award. In recent years, industry greats such as REZA, Steve McCurry, Sebastiao Salgado and Oscar Mitri have all been presented with the prestigious accolade.
Erwitt, who is also an acclaimed television producer, is well known for his photographs of 20th century icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Che Guevara and John F. Kennedy. Erwitt said: "Many thanks to the HIPA for the Photography Appreciation Award which I am honoured and delighted to accept. It is particularly pleasant to have this recognition at this stage of my long career in photography.
Bait Al Zubair
The HIPA's Photography Research/Report Award will be awarded to the Bait Al Zubair Foundation which started out as a private museum in Oman in 1998. The foundation was founded by Mohammad Al Zubair to enrich and encourage arts and photography in Omani society. One of Bait Al Zubair's many great accomplishments is the diversity of the art and cultural publications it has published over the years.
