“Nelson Mandela said, the cause of Palestine is the first cause of mankind,” said Dr Mustafa Barghouthi, General Secretary, Palestinian National Initiative, who spoke passionately during the second day of The Arab Media Forum.

Invoking Mandela’s war on the apartheid, Dr Barghouthi stressed on the need for the Palestine cause to remain a central subject to unify the Arabian masses. Mandela had apparently likened South Africa’s struggle to that of Palestine, and had said, “Our freedom is not complete till the Palestine issue is settled.”

Speaking of the “anarchy and uncontrollable military groups in the region”, and the impossibility of the two-state solution, Dr Barghouthi said: “How can Arabs accept Israeli domination? Israel cannot remain in isolation”. He also said that, “Struggle with Israel and the Israel-Palestine attracts media worldwide”. So there is no question of forgetting.

When a member in the audience questioned Dr Barghouthi about the balance of power, and how there can be a balance of power when the US backs Israel, Dr Barghouthi answered that the “US is no longer the sole power”, and now “the world is multi-polar”, and India and China are powers to be reckoned with.

“There is no way to forget Palestine as it is much bigger than any attempt to overshadow it.” He said the media should not only focus on the negative aspects of Palestine, but that we should reflect on what is going on in Palestine and also discuss the positives.”
