Sony has announced another round of price increases for its PlayStation hardware, including the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal, citing “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”

The new prices will come into effect on April 2, 2026, marking yet another change in the cost of entry for console gaming.
Why Sony is raising prices again
In a statement published on the PlayStation Blog, Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, described the increase as a “necessary step” to sustain innovation and maintain high-quality gaming experiences.
The reasoning reflects broader global trends, from inflation and currency fluctuations to rising component costs, particularly memory chips. The surge in AI-driven demand has significantly increased RAM prices, putting additional pressure on hardware manufacturers.

When the console launched in November 2020, it was priced at $499.99. With the latest increase, the base model now effectively starts at $600, a $100 jump, while the PS5 Pro has surged by $150 to $900.
This marks the second consecutive year of price hikes, following a $50 increase across PlayStation hardware in 2025.
What this means for the UAE market
While Sony has not announced UAE-specific pricing yet, global increases typically translate into higher retail prices locally due to import costs, VAT, and retailer margins.
For UAE gamers, this could mean:
Entry-level PS5 prices pushing well beyond Dh2,300–2,500
Premium pricing for the PS5 Pro nearing or exceeding Dh3,500
Sony isn’t alone in raising prices. Nintendo increased the price of the original Switch in 2025, and speculation suggests its next-gen console could follow suit. Meanwhile, Microsoft also raised prices for Xbox consoles, controllers, and accessories last year.
The trend points to a wider industry recalibration, where rising production costs are being passed directly to consumers.
The 'GTA 6' effect?
Interestingly, the price hike lands eight months before the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI, one of the most highly anticipated games of the decade.
With no PC version expected at launch, GTA 6 is poised to drive massive console sales, making this price increase particularly strategic. For many players, upgrading to current-gen hardware will no longer be optional.
