UAE students and young researchers under 21 do not have to pay registration fees to file patents.
The 'Patent Hive' project, launched by the Ministry of Economy on Monday, aims to boost the patent granting rate and encourage innovators to apply for patents by waiving registration fees and streamlining the registration process. This initiative is designed to enhance the UAE's competitiveness in innovation and creativity, both regionally and globally.
To expedite the registration process, the “Patent Hive” project reduces the time required to register patents from 42 months to only 6 months, which contributes to achieving the target of increasing the number of registered patents from 4,481 patents to 6,000 patents by 2026, and consolidates the UAE's position as a global centre for innovation.

The project also provides specialised training programmes and technical consultations provided by the Ministry of Economy in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) to build the capacities of national cadres and raise their awareness of the importance of intellectual property.
The “Patent Hive” project was launched in the presence of representatives of universities and research centres in the country to support and encourage innovators to register patents and enhance the UAE's competitiveness in the fields of innovation and creativity.

Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, said the UAE has made great strides in developing the intellectual property sector, as it is a basic and essential pillar for enhancing the growth of the national economy, and has worked to provide a national environment that nurtures intellectual property protection activities in various fields, especially registering and documenting patents in accordance with the best international practices.
He added that the Patent Hive project will “make the UAE the global centre for the new economy, and consolidate its position among the top 15 countries in the world in the Global Innovation Index.”
The new project is launched within the framework of the intellectual property system launched by the Ministry early last year in cooperation with its partners from the public and private sectors.
