A 12-year-old girl was hospitalised after she consumed a soft drink from a can infested with invertebrates. When the girl took a gulp from the Coca-Cola can, she felt something unusual in her mouth and discovered it was a worm that she had swallowed.
The girl from Andria in southern Italy was hospitalised where she underwent several tests, but luckily doctors did not find any signs of illness, according to reports in RT.
"First macroscopic examination of the worm revealed there are no elements that cause concern but we will send the sample to the zooprophylactic institute of Foggia for in-depth analysis by experts," hospital spokesman Stefano Porziotta was quoted saying.
"The girl isn't suffering from vomiting or diarrhea or other alarming symptoms; she will remain in hospital for a few hours," he added.
The incident was reported to police and Food and Nutrition Hygiene inspectors are carrying out inspections on the worm-infested can.
However, this is not the first time that such incidents have surfaced. Last year, a woman in New York fell seriously ill after she swallowed a squid-like creature from a can of Vita Coca Pure Coconut Water.
