Vastanvi’s U-turn on Modi angers BJP

AHMEDABAD — The legal cell of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Surat BJP unit have urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to arrest Maulana Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi, former vice-chancellor of Darul Uloom, Deoband (Uttar Pradesh), and slap a ban on his entry into Gujarat.

Angered by the ‘provocative and ‘anti-peace’ remarks of the high-brow, controversial cleric at a meeting organised by the minority cell of the Congress in Surat district on Monday, the saffron party has told the poll panel that Vastanvi’s statements has violated its model code of conduct.

The MBA cleric, who hails from Gujarat but runs the Jamia Islamia Ishaatul Uloom in Akklakuwa in Nandurbar of Maharashtra, had in his address to a 1,500-strong audience said that time was ripe to ‘kick out’ Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and had made an appeal to vote for the Congress in the assembly polls on December 13 and 17.

Gujarat BJP media cell chief Jagdish Bhavsar told Khaleej Times that Vastanvi’s words could disturb peace and spark communal passions in the state ahead of the elections. “Maulana Vastanvi has spewed venom against the Gujarat’s sadbhavna (goodwill), the new system that has made national unity stronger. He has used indecent words against the CM from a political platform and breached model code of conduct”, he said.

The cleric, who was removed from the post of vice-chancellor of Darul Uloom Deoband, for praising Modi’s development policy in January 2011, had said that it was a crime to praise a “zalim” (“tyrant”), adding that he never praised the Gujarat chief minister. He also said that the so-called sadbhavna (goodwill) mission held in the state was nothing but a deception, and asked the Muslim community members to unite and vote for the Congress.
