The ministry of foreign affairs said that individuals are held in detention on the basis of legal procedures, and not for exercising their rights to expression or for political reasons, adding that they have been subject to due legal process as guaranteed by Bahrain's constitution.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates that political expression is a fundamental right and that the freedom of expression is enshrined in the constitution and protected by the law," the ministry said in a statement.
"The government of Bahrain will not tolerate incitement to violence, and it is the government's duty to confront violence and incitement and to protect citizens, residents, and visitors alike.
"Bahrain boasts a strong track record of openness and cooperation with the international community and partners, including the United States, on a number of issues. This includes human rights, political areas, and criminal justice reforms, and Bahrain will continue this mutually beneficial cooperation.
"As with the comprehensive reforms implemented in various areas in recent years, the government will continue to deliver sustainable development for all sections of society that serves the higher national interests," the ministry said.
