Acting Under Secretary of State Rose Gottemoeller said Friday that Russian and U.S. technical experts should get together to discuss the shield’s specifics. She spoke on a visit to Moscow.

NATO’s U.S.-led missile defense plans have long been an irritant in relations with Moscow. The Kremlin has rejected U.S. assurances that the shield is needed to fend off an Iranian missile threat and voiced concern that it will eventually grow powerful enough to challenge Russia’s nuclear deterrent.

Gottemoeller told reporters that expert discussions should help dispel Moscow’s concerns.
