A restaurant in Birmingham has been fined £50,000(Dh 249,229 for serving food on 'unhygienic' wooden plates, posing a risk of food poisoning.
The Birmingham City Council slapped the enormous fine after it observed that Ibrahim's Grill and Steak House in Acocks Green violated several safety and hygiene measures.
It is in October 2016 that inspectors were first called to this restaurant on Warwick Road after 14 people allegedly fell ill due to food poisoning outbreak. The inspectors also noticed a number of concerns about cleanliness, including a reliance on the use of disposable gloves rather than hand washing, poor cleaning of the premises, and use of sanitising chemicals not in line with manufacturer instructions.
Though improvements were observed when the inspectors visited again two months later, they notified the wooden boards were still being used to serve food. The council stated that the boards were worn out and certainly 'incapable' of being cleaned. The restaurant admitted at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Thursday that it had failed to comply with a hygiene improvement notice by continuing to use the wooden plates.
The court also ruled that the restaurant must also pay £670 costs and £120 victim surcharge.
Mark Croxford, head of environmental health at the council said, "It is completely unacceptable for businesses to put the health of people eating at their restaurants at risk."
According to the BBC, the restaurant denied commenting on the issue at this stage.
