The campaign for the seat, started soon after the demise of Food and Civil Supplies Minister T M Jacob, gained momentum after the poll date was announced by the Election Commission in the third week of this month.

While both the candidates — M J Jacob of the LDF and Anoop Jacob of the UDF — have personally met most voters by now, their leaders are now engaged in reaching out to the electorate by addressing meetings in every nook and corner of the constituency.

Senior leaders of both the fronts started descending on the constituency even before the candidates filed their nominations. Top LDF leaders like opposition leader V S Achuthanandan and Communist Party of India (Marxist) secretary Pinarayi Vijayan have already spent several days in the constituency by now.

From the UDF side, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala and several ministers have completed one round of campaigning and will be going there next week for an intensive campaign.

Both the fronts are engaged in an aggressive campaign as the outcome of the by-election to be held on March 18 is crucial for the Oommen Chandy government surviving on a wafer thin majority of three seats.

With the political, caste and communal factors almost evenly poised for both the fronts, the unattached voters will be the decisive factor in the constituency. The UDF is trying to win them by focusing on the development programmes initiated by their government in the last nine months.

They are hopeful that the mega projects like the metro rail at Cochin, high-speed rail corridor from Trivandrum to Kasargod, industrial corridor between Cochin and Coimbatore and the Palghat rail coach factory being pursued by the government will make a positive impact on the electorate. Moreover, they think that the UDF decision to make Anoop a minister in place of his father will also influence the voters.
