Thousands form human chain for Cochin Metro

TRIVANDRUM — Thousands of people in Kerala’s commercial hub of Cochin formed a human chain on Saturday between Alwaye and Petta, the 25km route of the proposed metro rail, in protest against alleged attempts to torpedo the project.

Activists of about 100 organisations, including political parties and socio-cultural bodies and trade unions participated in the protest called “human metro” organized by Nagara Vikasana Samithi. Prominent personalities form different walks of life like film makers, artistes and jurists joined the chain.

The prominent among those who participated in the protest included former Supreme Court judge Justice V R Krishna Iyer, former federal ministers P C Thomas, O Rajagopal and former state ministers S Sarma and N K Premachandran, film makers Ranjith and Vinayan, actors Anoop Menon and actress Meera Nandan. Communist Party of India (Marxist) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the march at Jose Junction.
