The Ministry of Justice says the executions took place late Friday at prisons in four cities, two days after Justice Minister Tseng Yung-fu signed execution orders.

The ministry says all of the inmates executed Friday had committed multiple murders.

It is the fourth time Taiwan has carried out executions since Tseng became justice minister in 2010. Six executions were carried out on Dec. 21. Taiwanese executions are carried out by shooting.

Vice Justice Minister Chen Ming-tang said the convicts were executed in response to public calls to curb a rising crime wave, including a failed train bombing last week.
