Libya’s official news agency is reporting a suicide car bombing on the outskirts of the eastern city of Benghazi has killed eight soldiers.

It says the early Sunday morning attack targeted a military checkpoint where people stop at before entering the city and that more than ten soldiers were wounded. The blast also wounded several people who were waiting to be checked.

Earlier, a security official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief journalists said at least six people were killed.

Violence has rocked Libya over the past two years after the end of the eight-month civil war that toppled and killed longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Benghazi, the birthplace of the 2011 uprising, is a stronghold of militias with roots in anti-Gadhafi rebel brigade.
