The senior vice-president of the Middle East division of Fedex, the service being used to transmit overseas votes, David Ross said some facilities had been closed and pick-ups and deliveries stopped in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy.

“FedEx is committed to resuming service to affected areas as safety allows. However, local disruptions may occur as authorities restrict access or downed power lines, road closures and/or storm debris limit our access.”

A US embassy spokesman said he had not heard anything to suggest there would be difficulty getting the overseas votes to the country in time for the election. “I’m sure everybody will do everything they can to ensure the votes are counted in the election, but commercial flights have been cancelled and obviously our mail service has been delayed because of the storm.”
