The Indian government has suspended all flights originating from the UK, news agency ANI has tweeted.

The suspension is effective from 11.59pm, December 22, till 11.59pm, December 31, the news agency added. It quoted the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation in the news alert.

As a measure of "abundant precaution", passengers arriving from the UK in all transit flights (flights that have taken off or flights which are reaching India before 11.59 pm, December 22) will be subjected to mandatory RT-PCR test on arrival at airports.

India has become the latest country to halt flights from the UK following the discovery of a new strain of Covid-19. Saudi Arabia, France, Italy, Belgium, Turkey and Israel have already suspended flights from the country.
