The price of flight tickets in India is likely to go up, as the government today announced a 5 per cent increase in the lower airfare band for domestic flights.

According to LiveMint, this is the second time this year that the government has increased the fare limits, with the first hike being in February.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted: "There has been a continuous rise in price of ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel) so it has been decided to increase the lower fare band by 5% keeping the upper fare band unchanged. We may open the sector for 100% operations when daily passenger traffic crosses 3.5 lakhs on 3 occasions in a month."

Continuing the Twitter thread the minister further wrote," Last few days have seen a decline in the number of air passengers largely due to restrictions & imposition of compulsory RT-PCR test by various states. Due to this we have decided to retain the permissible limit to 80% of schedule."

The Aviation Ministry while announcing the resumption of domestic flight last May had placed upper and lower limits on airfares through seven bands on the basis of how long the flight was.

The first band consists of flights shorter than 40-minute, whose lower limit had been increased to ₹2,310 (Dh 117) on Friday. The lower limit for the highest band of flights 180-210 minutes long was increased to ₹7,560 (Dh 383).
