Islamabad - The Sindh government has indicated that the powers of the Rangers in Karachi may be further extended beyond the 30 days extension allowed last week.
In a statement, a provincial government spokesman in Karachi refuted reports of any strain in relations with the para-military force, adding that Rangers were performing well.
"The question of extension in Rangers' powers would be decided by the assembly," the statement said.
Meanwhile, Muttahida Qaumi Movement's Rabita Committee has slammed the government statement and reiterated party's demand that Rangers be withdrawn from the city. MQM chief Altaf Hussain said his party alone is targeted by the security force which smack of prejudice and discrimination.
Altaf said Mohajirs are being persecuted during the current operation. His party represents Mohajirs and for that reason it is being subjected to repression with an aim to eliminate it.
Apparently hinting that the paramilitary force is there to stay in Karachi beyond the one-month extension, Director-General of Rangers Major General Bilal Akbar has said that Karachi operation would continue till its logical conclusion is achieved.
