Pilot of Air Canada Flight 608 swung into action and got 23 pizzas delivered to passengers inside the plane after it was stranded for hours on a snowy tarmac.
The plane bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia, took off from Toronto on March 4 but was diverted to Frederiction, New Brunswick, due to a snowstorm. It finally landed in Halifax at noon on March 5 after being stuck for several hours in Fredericton. That's when the pilot decided to feed passengers and ordered pizzas from a restaurant which was delivered right at the plane's doorstep.
The manager at Minglers Restaurant and Pub in Oromocto, Jofee Larivée, received an unusual order of delivering pizzas to an airplane. Surprised Larivée spoke to the pilot who ordered for 23 pizzas topped with cheese and pepperoni. "We told him we could have them made in an hour or hour and a half," Larivée said, adding that they had never before delivered pizza to an airplane, and they were "laughing all night" about the unusual order.
The restaurant staff got the pizzas ready in an hour and sent them to the airport via Minglers' delivery service.
Larivée said she called the plane to inform the pilot that the pizzas had arrived post which the captain sent people to meet the delivery at the door.
A passenger, Philomena Hughes, told CNN partner CBC News that the pilot kept the passengers informed and also fed them as they had been on the plane for about eight hours from the time they boarded in Toronto. "It was something that could have been very stressful; he made it a lot easier. There was lots of help, there were Air Canada Jazz pilots that were traveling on the plane and they were helping to pick up the pizza and distribute it. Everybody chipped in, so he didn't want to take the whole credit for himself," Hughes said.
While the restaurant manager also appreciated the pilot's kind gesture and noted that he even called the restaurant later to thank for the quick pizza delivery.
