Gaza’s ruling Hamas movement had suggested earlier this week that the two sides have overcome a key obstacle to reunification by scuttling troubled plans to form an interim government before national elections.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas later set a May 4 date for the ballot.

But senior Hamas official Mahmoud Zahar told the London-based daily Asharq Al Awsat in an interview published Wednesday that ‘reconciliation will not be achieved at all’ because Abbas ‘is not interested in achieving it.’

He says Abbas is balking because the US and Israel oppose his reconciliation with the militant Hamas.
