Oman launches calendar, alms apps

MUSCAT — The Awqaf and Religious Affairs Ministry has launched two new applications ‘How to Give alms’ (Zakat) and ‘Omani Calendar’, for iPhones and smartphones supported by IOS and Android systems.

With this, the ministry has entered an advanced stage in the utilisation of smart applications and programmes offered by modern technologies, the Internet and social networks, an official said.

Shaikh Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Salmi, the Awqaf and Religious Affairs Minister, inaugurated the new apps at a ceremony here also attended by Shaikh Dr Kahlan bin Nabhan Al Kharousi, Assistant Grand Mufti of Oman.

How to Give alms’ provides information about Zakat, its laws, provisions, obligations and the amount for different categories. The application is connected to the websites of the ministry and Ifta office, and to a website for global gold prices. The Omani Calendar application offers several services such as the Hijri and Gregorian calendars, exact prayer times in different areas, information about religious and national events, an electronic calendar and shape of moon. The ministry can directly communicate with application users through SMS alerts and users with the ministry through its website.

Pact to curb crimes signed

muscat — Oman has signed the Arab Agreement for Fighting Trans-national Border Organised Crime’ and the Arab Agreement for Combatting IT Crimes. Both were ratified by Arab Justice and Interior Ministers in December 2010.

Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Zaher Al Hinai, Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council, signed the pacts at a ceremony at the Arab League headquarter in Cairo on Wednesday. The Arab League was represented by Radhwan bin Khadhra, Head of Legal Administration and Adviser to the League’s secretary-general.

The agreements aim at enhancing cooperation among Arab countries in checking organised trans-national crimes and IT crimes and protect the security of Arab countries and safeguarding their interests and the safety of their citizens, Khadhra said.

Ban on two factories

muscat — Authorities in Oman have slapped production curbs on two factories for flouting environment regulations. The Environment and Climate Affairs Ministry ordered Oman Cement Company (OCC) to halt its first production line for one month for violating the Environment Protection and Combating Pollution Law (EPCPL).

The company was also found in breach of emission standards despite repeated warnings. The ministry said the ban would be re-imposed in case OCC breaks rules again.

Al Shafaq Construction Company was also ordered to stop production for one month for violating EPCPL.
