Themed ‘Empowered Women, Strong Pakistan’ the rally was organised by the MQM and was addressed from London via telephone by party chief Altaf Hussain, who along with other leaders highlighted the role women played in the development of a country.
Hussain stressed that a strong Pakistan needed empowered women.
Party supporters from various cities and towns of Sindh began arriving into Karachi from Saturday to attend the rally on especially hired buses and other available means of transport.
The rally stage was decorated with huge pink and red roses painted at the front, and chairs, more than 100,000 in number, were also pink in colour.
Scores of stalls serving a variety of things including food were set up at the entrance of the rally. Some of them also offered free MQM-coloured dupattas, bangles and provided henna and face-painting on the occasion.
Earlier, the venue was visited by the bomb disposal squad which checked the venue. The girls’ wing of the All Pakistan Muttahida Students Organisation (APMSO) provided security to the participants along with Karachi police.
Nearly 5,000 law enforcers including women police were deployed to oversee security as every participant was made to pass through electronic gates set up at the venue.
Hundreds of MQM volunteers were also deployed to work as temporary traffic wardens to control the flow of traffic surrounding the meeting place.
