An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 struck Southern Iran on Sunday morning, according to the National Seismic Network of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM).

The quake struck at 9.11am UAE time at a depth of 10km. Although nearby, there was no impact in the UAE, the Met confirmed.

Just a week ago, the country was hit by another quake measuring 5.1-magnitude in the southern region.

Meanwhile on January 3, a 2.2-magnitude tremor was recorded in south of Musandam. Musandam lies to the south of the Strait of Hormuz and is mainly governed by Oman as the Musandam Governorate, with certain parts governed by the UAE, including Ras Al Khaimah and parts of Dibba.

In 2025, a magnitude 2.9 earthquake hit the south of Musandam on December 28, with tremors felt slightly by residents in the UAE, though authorities confirmed it caused no damage.

Although the UAE is not located in a major earthquake zone, occasional tremors can be felt because of its closeness to the Zagros mountain range, one of the world’s most active seismic regions. With neighbouring countries such as Iran, Iraq, and Oman frequently experiencing earthquakes, minor shaking is sometimes felt across the Emirates.
