Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday said Israel "deeply regrets" the loss of life in a mistaken strike that hit Gaza's only Catholic church.

"Israel deeply regrets that a stray ammunition hit Gaza's Holy Family Church. Every innocent life lost is a tragedy", Netanyahu said, adding that an investigation was underway and Israel was "committed to protecting civilians and holy sites".
