Only five per cent of the trainees were men.

The study, conducted by Paci and covering the period 2003-11, revealed that 95 per cent of the apprentices were women. The authority found that men shun craft industries because of the low income that handicrafts generate as compared to other jobs.

The study also indicated that families do not encourage young people to take up handicrafts seriously.
