Roses, diamonds, romantic dinners getaways are some of the things synonymous with Valentine's Day celebrations around the world. But one husband went a step ahead and gifted his own kidney to his sick wife.
According to a report in the Metro, 53-year-old Karen Smith was quoted as saying that she owed her life to her 'perfect husband' Darren, who donated his kidney to her.
The couple has been married for 17 years.
Karen's husband also joked about it, saying that giving her the kidney was cheaper than giving her roses.
He had also earlier promised to give his kidney if the situation demanded and kept his promise on the Valentine's Day.
Darren's viability as a donor was confirmed after he underwent necessary tests for an entire year. This was to rule out the risk of the kidney not being fit for his wife.
Karen was diagnosed with a chronic kidney disease in 2011 and her situation; six years later worsened to a degree where she ended up needing dialysis.
It was on Valentine's Day in 2017, that the kidney transplant had been performed on Karen, after which she says that their lives had been changed overnight.
Karen's own mother had also passed away after battling with the chronic kidney disease in 2012.
