Kurien meets Sonia fuelling report she will put in papers

TRIVANDRUM - Amid speculation that he will put in his papers, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P J Kurien on Thursday met his party boss Sonia Gandhi and explained his position in the Suryanelli gang rape case, which has returned to haunt him nearly a decade after he was exonerated by the Supreme Court.

Kurien refused to divulge details of the discussions he had with the Congress president for nearly 30 minutes in New Delhi. “What I discussed with my party leader is not for the media,” Kurien told reporters after the talks. The speculation about Kurien’s resignation is in the light of a thinking in a section of the Congress that allowing Kurien to conduct the discussions on the ordinance concerning will embarrass the party. Reports said that the party has already started the search for an alternative leader to Kurien.
