The Kerala unit of Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) has demanded the resignation of Federal Minister of State for Human Resources Development Shashi Tharoor to ensure a fair probe into the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar.

The state secretariat of the party alleged here on Saturday that the Delhi Crime Branch investigating the mysterious death was trying to save Tharoor. A secretariat statement said he should be taken into custody and interrogated to bring out the truth. It said that there were several mysteries to be resolved in the case.

The statement cited Sunanda’s revelations about corruption involved in the Indian Premier League and the minister’s relation with the Pakistan journalist, whom the deceased called an ISI agent, injuries found in her body and the presence of poison in her body as the major ones. The statement pointed out that the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, who inquired into the death had directed the police to probe suicide, homicide and accident angles. This may not be possible as long Tharoor continues in the ministry.

The statement said that his party had already sent a wrong message by promoting him as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) spokesman. The secretariat has viewed this as a big challenge to the women. The secretariat urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to remove Tharoor from the ministry if he does not step down voluntarily.

Meanwhile, Sunanda’s brother Colonel Rajesh Pushkar has given a clean chit to his brother in law. Earlier her son Shiv Menon had ruled out any foul play in the death, which he said was an “unfortunate mix of stress, tension and wrong medication.”

Rajesh said in a statement in New Delhi that it was unimaginable to him and the family to think that Tharoor would do any harm to his wife.
