The internal security situation of the country and army’s role in helping civil administration to ensure peaceful and orderly elections figured during the meeting.

Gen. Kayani was the first important caller on the interim premier as he began official business after being sworn in a day earlier.

The army chief briefed PM Khoso on his meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry in Amman (Jordan) on Sunday.

Kerry, who landed in Kabul last week after a trip to the Middle East, dropped Islamabad from his itinerary as Pakistan is preparings for general elections on May 11 that will mark the country’s first democratic transition of power. “Originally Secretary Kerry was hopeful he would be able to go to Pakistan on this trip as well,” a US official had told reporters travelling with Kerry.

“But as the government there enters a very historic period on this electoral process we wanted to fully respect those institutions and the ongoing process.”

The meeting in Amman provided an opportunity to US Secretary of State to hear from one of Pakistan’s most powerful figures about his views on democratic transition in the country without hiccups and convey US support in this process.
